Tata Steel Reinvents Rural Road Construction
Sustainable Rural Roads with Tata Steel’s Slag Aggregates
Tata Steel’s innovative use of steel slag aggregates in constructing rural roads marks a significant step towards sustainable infrastructure development, aligning with Mission LiFE principles.
JAMSHEDPUR – In an innovative step towards sustainable infrastructure, Tata Steel has utilized its processed steel slag aggregates, Tata Aggreto and Tata Nirman, in the construction of rural roads.
This initiative aligns with the principles of Mission LiFE (Life Style for Environment) introduced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at COP26.
Tata Aggreto, India’s first steel slag-based branded product, is extensively used in national highways and now in rural roads, significantly reducing the environmental footprint.
With the goal of "Zero Waste," Tata Steel’s Industrial By-Products Management Division (IBMD) focuses on efficient by-product management and the development of new products and applications.
This approach not only preserves biodiversity by reducing the need for natural aggregate mining but also eliminates long-distance transportation of aggregates.
Tata Steel’s commitment to Circular Economy principles is evident in their production of sustainable products with minimal ecological impact.
The company’s state-of-the-art accelerated weathering facility processes LD slag, ensuring high-quality slag-based aggregates.
Over 1.5 lac tonnes of these aggregates have been used in constructing 21 roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) in East Singhbhum district, developed by Jharkhand State Rural Road Development Authority (JSRRDA).
A workshop jointly organized by Tata Steel and JSRRDA saw over 40 delegates from across India, including Ministry of Rural Development officials, deliberate on green technologies in rural road construction.
This initiative has been well-received by delegates, highlighting Tata Steel’s pioneering role in sustainable construction practices.
