Remembering JP Movement Martyrs: Tribute Paid in Jamshedpur

Tribute meeting in Jamshedpur remembers three martyrs of 1974’s JP movement, demands memorial.

JAMSHEDPUR – A tribute meeting was recently held at Sakchi Shaheed Chowk in memory of three student martyrs of the countrywide JP movement of 1974.

Organized by JP Yuva Chhatra Sangharsh Morcha, the event saw the participation of agitators from that era.

Annually, a meeting is organized at this location to pay homage to the three agitating students from Jamshedpur – Pranab Mukherjee, Rajiv Ranjan, and Mohammad Mohsin.

The tragedy unfolded on this day, July 18, 1974, at Shaheed Chowk, Sakchi.

Former agitators joined the tribute meeting, collectively honoring the memory of the late Jai Prakash Narayan with flower offerings.

Santosh Agarwal, a participant from the agitation period, reiterated the call for a martyr’s memorial at the site.

Sanjeev Acharya, the event organizer and coordinator of the joint front, stressed that demands for a memorial have been persistently raised with the administration and state government.

With the golden jubilee of the movement approaching next year, Acharya confirmed plans to erect the memorial prior to the milestone.

The front is prepared to construct the memorial independently, if necessary, and is ready to face any challenges this decision might entail, Acharya said.
