JAMSHEDPUR — Three thieves broke into a locked home in Bagbera by cutting through its tin roof, making away with property worth nearly Rs 15 lakh in cash, jewellery, and clothing.
The targeted residence belongs to one Gaurang Mandal of Maa Tarani Colony, Road Number 2, in the Purba Ghaghidih panchayat area. His father had died the previous Saturday. As a result, the entire family had travelled to Surda village near Bagbera‘s broader Ghatshila belt for the shraddha rituals. The thieves exploited the emptied house.
According to the family, the intruders sliced open the roof’s tin sheeting to gain entry. They then proceeded to ransack every room, smashing doors, almirahs, a bed, and a locker.
The haul included roughly Rs 1.5 lakh in cash, gold and silver jewellery, a gold chain, silver utensils, and a silver idol of a deity. In addition to these, clothing worth about Rs 50,000 — including jeans and sarees from an apparel shop run from the premises — was also taken.
The Rs 1.5 lakh in cash had been freshly withdrawn from a bank. It was meant for the shraddha ceremony scheduled for Wednesday. However, that sum was among the first things stolen.
In all, the family estimates losses at approximately Rs 15 lakh. About three people are believed to have carried out the operation, said a source close to the family.
When the family returned home after learning of the theft, they found belongings strewn across the floor. Meanwhile, all the valuables had vanished. The entire family was left in a state of shock.
A complaint against unidentified thieves has been filed at Bagbera police station. Officers visited the site promptly. On the other hand, investigators are also questioning neighbours and scanning CCTV footage from the area.
The incident has sent a wave of fear through the locality. Moreover, residents have raised pointed questions about the adequacy of police patrolling in the neighbourhood. Such break-ins during family absences have become a recurring concern in several parts of Jamshedpur. In a similar case, Parsudih police had recently foiled a robbery attempt, arresting three criminals.
