Street Vendors Protest Under National Hawker Federation Banner at DC Office in Jamshedpur

Street vendors protest against forced eviction and demand resettlement on International Hawkers Day, as starvation looms for their families.

JAMSHEDPUR – On Friday, street vendors in Mango, united under the banner of the National Hawker Federation, staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office to voice their demands.

These vendors are protesting against their forced eviction by the district administration which took place before any resettlement plans were made.

Around 150 vendors have been displaced without any efforts made to reestablish their livelihoods.

This has led to a looming crisis of starvation among the street vendors and their families.

As part of their protest on International Hawkers Day, the shopkeepers observed silence in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

They submitted a plea to the Deputy Commissioner, asking for suitable alternative locations for the displaced vendors from Mango, thereby preventing their families from facing starvation.

It’s important to note that around 60 roadside shops in Mango were demolished on May 24th.

Earlier, in March, an additional 60 to 70 shops were torn down by the district administration. Hundreds of shopkeepers participated in this protest.
