China warns ban on apps will backfire, says impossible to oust Chinese companies

Jamshedpur: China has subtly warned India that its recent decision to ban 59 Chinese apps will ultimately backfire on its own tech sector.

Global Times, widely regarded as a mouthpiece of ruling Chinese Communist Party, has suggested in an analysis that this ban on 59 apps developed by Chinese companies will hurt India’s technology and internet start-ups as they lose Chinese investments.

The article quotes the Foreign Minister spokesperson Zhao Lijian saying: “Indian government has a responsibility to safeguard the legal rights and interests of Chinese firms.”

The article also quotes She Jun, executive partner at the India Investment Services Centre of the Yingke Law First, as saying: “Indian government’s behaviour was too childish and emotional and a very bad signal for further Chinese investment in India.”

Global Times adds: “Chinese technology companies are betting big on India’s rising technology scene, so reducing their influence will be difficult. Their support for Indian start-ups has brought money, cutting-edge technologies and experience in scaling up businesses.

It also quotes Zhou Rong, a senior research fellow at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at the Renmin University of China as saying: “ The policy is aimed at addressing anti-China sentiment arising from recent border clash, but in the short run, the ban is too difficult to execute.:
