JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Main Hospital observed World Suicide Prevention Day with a series of events focused on raising awareness about mental health.
The Psychiatry department at Tata Main Hospital (TMH), in collaboration with Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC), organized the observance, which featured a guest lecture by Dr. Varun Mehta, a Professor of Psychiatry from the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), Ranchi.
The lecture, titled "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," attracted a diverse audience, including medical professionals, students, and Tata Steel employees.
Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel, served as the Chief Guest and emphasized the importance of balancing work and life to manage stress effectively.
He stated, "Work-life balance and time management are crucial tools in combating stress and preventing suicides."
Sanjeev Kumar Chaudhary, President of the Tata Workers’ Union, also addressed the audience as the Guest of Honour, stressing the pivotal role of family support in navigating stressful situations.
In the days leading up to the main event, several awareness initiatives were conducted.
On September 6, a session titled “Emotional Wellness” was held specifically for transperson employees at Tata Steel, attended by 70 participants.
Additionally, on September 8, a session focused on the “Emotional Safety of Adolescents” was organized for parents, drawing participation from 130 parents.
The day’s events also included a prize distribution ceremony for winners of various competitions.
These contests, which included poster and essay writing for school students and poster and reel-making for MTMC medical and nursing students, saw participation from over 30 schools across Jamshedpur.
The event concluded with a skit performed by MBBS students from MTMC.
Dr. Manoj Kumar Sahoo, Head of the Psychiatry Department at TMH, coordinated the program, which was attended by notable figures including Dr. Sudhir Rai, General Manager of Medical Services at Tata Steel, Dr. G Pradeep Kumar, Dean of MTMC, and Dr. Mamta Rath Dutta, Chief Consultant of Medical Support Services.
