On 45th anniversary of emergency BJP leaders remind Congress of its undemocratic record

Jamshedpur: Senior BJP leaders have launched a frontal political assault on Congress on the 45th anniversary of emergency and have reminded the party of its not so stellar democratic record.

The political attack on Congress was launched by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah himself. In a statement he said: On this day, 45 years ago one family’s greed for power led to the imposition of the emergency. Overnight the nation was turned into a prison. The press, courts, free speech… all were trampled over. Atrocities were committee on the poor and downtrodden.”

Mocking the Congress, he further said: “Due to efforts of lakhs of people the Emergency was lifted. Democracy was restored in India but it remained absent in the Congress. The interests of one family prevailed over party interests and national interests. This sorry state of affairs thrives in today’s Congress too!.”

On the other hand, Arjun Munda, the BJP leader from Jharkhand and the Union Minister, tribal affairs too reminded Congress of its undemocratic record.

In a series of tweets, he paid respects to the people who resisted the emergency and struggled to protect democracy in the country. He said the country would never forget their sacrifice.

He also recalled how Lal Krishna Advani and thousands of other leaders were imprisoned on June 26, 1975 soon after the emergency was imposed.

Arjun Munda also lauded RSS and said that it had only one target – to restore democracy in the country.

On the other hand, BJP national president J P Nadda too called June 25, 1975 as a ‘Black Day’. He said that 1.40 lakh people were sent to jail and eve the judiciary and press were suppressed like never before.
