Runaway Vehicle Damages Bank Facade, Averts Bigger Tragedy

Key Points:

  • Truck loses control, crashes into Sakchi bank branch
  • Driver critically injured, rushed for medical treatment
  • Sakchi police reach spot, launch probe into accident cause

JAMSHEDPUR – A speeding truck went out of control and rammed straight into a branch of Kotak Mahindra Bank in the Sakchi police station area of Jamshedpur on Thursday, narrowly averting what could have been a much larger tragedy.

Panic gripped the neighbourhood soon after the crash, and a large crowd of onlookers quickly gathered at the scene. The front portion of the bank building was badly damaged in the collision, leaving the branch with significant structural losses.

Eyewitnesses said the truck had been travelling at high speed moments before the accident. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, sending it careening off the road and directly into the bank premises.

An ATM security guard posted at the bank had a narrow escape when the truck struck the building. Had the vehicle travelled even a short distance further, the consequences could have been far more severe.

The truck driver sustained serious injuries in the crash. Local residents alerted the police and an ambulance without delay, and the injured man was rushed to hospital, where his treatment is currently underway.

Meanwhile, officers from the Sakchi police station reached the spot soon after being informed and worked to bring the swelling crowd under control. Traffic in the area was disrupted for some time as a result of the accident.

A crane was later deployed to remove the damaged truck from the bank compound. Similar mishaps involving heavy vehicles have periodically raised safety concerns among traders in commercial hubs such as Bistupur and other busy market stretches of the city.

Police have since begun a detailed investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed and a loss of control by the driver were the primary factors behind the crash, though officers are examining every aspect before taking further action.
