SERAIKELA – Seraikela-Kharsawan police cracked a case of a life-threatening firing incident in the Kapali OP area within just 24 hours. The main accused, Mohammad Zahid Ansari alias Golden, was arrested in a dramatic ambush outside his own house.
Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiyari credited the swift action to police vigilance, technical surveillance and prompt response. He briefed reporters on the arrest and the recovery of a country-made pistol used in the crime, based on the accused’s disclosure.
According to the SP, Golden had opened fire with intent to kill on Sheikh Noor Mohammad, alias Babu Bhai alias Kana, in the Kapali OP area the previous day. The bullet grazed Kana Babu’s leg, leaving him injured. Kapali OP police reached the spot soon after receiving information and rushed the injured man to MGM Hospital for treatment. A live cartridge and an empty shell were also recovered from the scene.
However, the accused kept changing his location after the incident in an attempt to evade arrest. Police, meanwhile, kept a close watch on his movements. During this period, officers received a tip that the accused might visit his home late at night to collect clothes.
On receiving the input, a police team led by Kapali OP in-charge Avinash Kumar laid an ambush around his house. As the accused arrived under cover of darkness, the waiting team apprehended him on the spot. During questioning, the country-made pistol used in the crime was recovered on his disclosure. He was sent to judicial custody after completing the necessary legal procedure.
The SP further said the arrested accused has a criminal history and has been jailed six times in the past in various cases. Police said they are investigating his criminal network and other aspects linked to the incident.
Officials said the operation’s success was largely due to the prompt strategy and activeness of Kapali OP in-charge Avinash Kumar. The team formed under his leadership carried out continuous raids without wasting time and solved the case within 24 hours.
The raiding team included Kapali OP in-charge Avinash Kumar, Sub-Inspector Ranjit Kumar Singh, Sub-Inspector Heeralal Mundu and Tiger jawan Vipul Kumar Tiwari.
“The main accused in the Kapali shooting case has been arrested within 24 hours, and the country-made pistol used in the incident has also been recovered on his disclosure,” SP Manoj Swargiyari said. He added that the accused has a prior criminal record and warned that no one disturbing law and order in the district would be spared, saying police would continue strict action against such elements.
Meanwhile, the incident comes amid a series of firing-related arrests reported across the Kolhan region in recent weeks. In a separate case, two accused were arrested in the Kadma firing case, while police also carried out a crackdown on an illegal arms case in Bagbera. Elsewhere in the district, the DD Bar shooting case also remains under investigation. The state’s top police leadership had recently issued strict directives on law and order in the district. In Ramgarh, police had similarly conducted an encounter operation recovering a large cache of arms.
