Three Held After In-Laws Allegedly Killed Woman, Cremated Body Secretly

CHATRA – A married woman died under suspicious circumstances in Pakaria village under Itkhori police station. Her in-laws allegedly cremated her body overnight to destroy evidence.
The incident has been reported from Chatra district. It has caused shock among residents of the area.
Police swiftly arrested three accused following a complaint from the woman’s family. Officers are now searching for the remaining absconding suspects.
According to Nitesh Kumar Sahu, the deceased’s brother, his sister Chandani Devi was married 12 years ago. Her husband was Triveni Sao of Pakaria village, and the marriage had followed Hindu rituals.
Sahu, a resident of Dumri in Giridih district, alleged that his sister was subjected to years of abuse. He said her husband had an illicit relationship with another woman starting five years into the marriage.
Whenever Chandani objected to this, her husband allegedly assaulted her brutally while intoxicated. Her father-in-law Mahavir Sao, mother-in-law Kailati Devi and sister-in-law Pratima Devi were also named in the abuse.
The family claimed all three routinely subjected her to physical and mental torment. On the night of the incident, the in-laws reportedly called her brother with a fabricated story.
They allegedly told him Chandani had died due to stomach pain. However, by the time her family reached Pakaria village the next afternoon, the in-laws had already cremated the body secretly.
The in-laws did not inform the police about the death either, according to the complaint. “By the time police reached the cremation ground at 9 a.m. on information from the family, the body had been completely reduced to ashes,” said Abhishek Kumar Singh, the Itkhori police station in-charge.
Based on the brother’s written complaint, a case of murder and evidence tampering was registered. The case names 16 people along with 20 unidentified individuals, including the husband, in-laws and other relatives.
Itkhori police acted swiftly and arrested three of the accused. Meanwhile, intensive raids are underway to trace the remaining fugitive suspects.
