JAMSHEDPUR – A dispute over a motorcycle turned fatal for a young man in the Parsudih police station area after he returned from a wedding function. East Singhbhum police said they cracked the case within 24 hours and arrested four accused, while a juvenile in conflict with law was also detained.
DSP Law and Order Sumit Kumar shared details of the case during a press conference held on Friday.
According to police, the victim, Rohit Munda, had gone to attend a wedding function at Milap Bhawan in Sopodera on the night of July 8-9 along with his friends Sujal Lohar, Haripado Machhua, Sameer Munda, Ravi Yadav and Karan Patro. However, after the function ended late at night, an intoxicated Rohit mistakenly rode off on his friend Haripado Machhua’s motorcycle instead of his own and returned to his house in Sarjamda.
His friends later realised the motorcycle was missing and began inquiring in the neighbourhood. Meanwhile, they learned of its whereabouts and reached Rohit’s residence, where they found the bike parked. An argument broke out between the two sides over the matter, which soon escalated into a violent assault.
Police said Sujal, Haripado, Sameer, Ravi and others allegedly beat Rohit brutally with sticks and fists. Following the assault, the accused returned to their respective homes, while the injured Rohit also went back home. However, he was found dead at his residence the following morning.
An FIR was registered at Parsudih police station under case number 72/2026 on a written complaint filed by the victim’s parents, Putul Kalindi and Shankar Kalindi. The case was filed under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was launched.
Police said CCTV footage and secret information helped identify the accused. Based on their disclosures, two wooden sticks used in the assault were also recovered. A search is underway to nab the fifth accused, Karan Patro, who remains absconding. All the arrested accused have been sent to judicial custody.
The case is among a string of recent violent incidents reported from the Jamshedpur region. On Thursday, police in a separate case arrested a man accused of a murder after he surrendered at Bistupur police station. In Mango area, two people were arrested for possessing counterfeit cigarettes worth lakhs of rupees. East Singhbhum police had also earlier nabbed two cyber fraudsters in an online fraud case involving a Punjab businessman. Meanwhile, in Chandil area, two road accidents had left three youths critically injured. Investigators said the swift arrests reflect a broader pattern of quick case resolution by district police in recent weeks.
