JAMSHEDPUR – A 13-year-old girl studying at Kasturba Gandhi Residential School was rescued alive after she jumped into the Swarnarekha River from Dobo bridge in Sonari on Thursday morning.
The shocking incident occurred in Nirmal Nagar area under Sonari police station limits. The student was returning to her hostel with her mother after Chhath Puja holidays. However, while crossing the Dobo bridge, she suddenly leapt off into the river.
Witnesses said the girl’s mother had paused briefly for some work near the bridge. Meanwhile, the girl moved ahead and within moments took the drastic step. The scene created panic among nearby residents and passersby.
However, some local fishermen present on the riverbank immediately jumped into the river. They managed to pull the drowning child out safely. According to eyewitnesses, their quick response saved her life.
Soon after, locals informed Sonari police about the incident. Police reached the spot and arranged first aid for the girl before shifting her to a nearby hospital. Later, officials handed her over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for further care and evaluation.
According to police sources, the girl appeared to be under severe mental stress and expressed unwillingness to return to the hostel. The CWC has initiated counselling and psychological assessment to determine her mental condition and ensure her welfare.
Experts have highlighted that increasing academic pressure and lack of emotional communication often contribute to such incidents among adolescents. They have emphasized the need for greater attention to mental health in schools and families.
