CHAIBASA – A tragic collision between a speeding train and a wild elephant near Sonakhan station in Chakradharpur rail division has raised serious concerns over safety lapses. The animal was hit at dawn and later died during treatment.
Early Morning Collision
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 5 a.m. on Thursday. The Bhubaneswar-Dhanbad Special was moving at full speed when an elephant suddenly appeared on the track.
However, despite emergency brakes, the driver could not prevent the collision. The elephant was flung to the adjoining track by the severe impact.
Rescue and Death
Meanwhile, villagers rushed to the site and saw the elephant writhing in pain. A forest department medical team arrived and provided treatment. But by 3 p.m., the elephant succumbed to injuries. Locals expressed deep grief over the loss.
Identified Elephant Corridor
On the other hand, villagers pointed out that the site falls under a notified elephant corridor. They alleged that forest staff on duty failed to alert railway officials. “If the warning was shared in time, the accident could have been avoided,” said one villager.
Rail Traffic Impact
Besides, the collision affected train operations for hours. Trains delayed included Gaya-Mumbai Superfast Express, Rourkela-Bhubaneswar Intercity, Howrah-Pune Azad Hind Express, and Sambalpur-Sambaleshwari Express.
Anger and Accountability
Moreover, wildlife lovers and locals criticized the lack of coordination between forest and railway authorities. They claimed such lapses endanger both wildlife and passengers. Railway official Aditya Choudhary confirmed the incident and its operational impact.
