Tata Steel Pioneers Biochar Usage at Jamshedpur Plant

Environmental Initiative Cuts 50,000 Tonnes of CO2 Emissions Annually in Steel Production

Key Points:

* Biochar replaces 30,000 tonnes of fossil fuel since January 2023

* First Indian implementation in large blast furnaces exceeding 3000 m³

* Company targets Net Zero emissions by 2045 through sustainable practices

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel’s innovative biochar implementation at its Jamshedpur plant marks a significant advancement in sustainable steelmaking.

The company has achieved remarkable progress in its green initiatives. This breakthrough represents a major shift.

Moreover, the success has led to expansion across multiple blast furnaces. Meanwhile, plans for implementation at other sites are underway.

"This groundbreaking achievement sets new industry standards," stated an environmental expert.

Furthermore, Tata Steel’s commitment extends beyond biochar usage. The company employs solar energy in production facilities.

In addition, they utilize biofuel for transportation of materials. Their shipping operations now use B24 biofuel blend.

However, the biochar implementation required extensive testing. The trials began with one furnace before expanding.

Besides, Tata Steel’s Athagarh plant pioneered biomass usage in ferrochrome production. This initiative started earlier this year.

The company has earned global recognition for sustainability. They received the Steel Sustainability Champion award seven times.

Additionally, their Jamshedpur facility became India’s first ResponsibleSteel-certified site. Other plants followed suit.
