Indian Railways Slashes Advance Booking Window to 60 Days

New Policy Aims to Reduce Cancellations and Improve Efficiency

Key Points:

• Advance reservation period cut from 120 to 60 days, effective Nov 1, 2024

• Change expected to reduce cancellations and ticket blocking

• 365-day booking window for foreign tourists remains unchanged

JAMSHEDPUR – Indian Railways introduces a significant change to its booking policy, affecting millions of travelers.

The Indian Railways has announced a major revision to its advance reservation system.

Moreover, the advance booking window will be reduced from 120 days to 60 days starting November 1, 2024.

This change aims to streamline ticket bookings and minimize cancellations across the network.

"The 60-day window has proven most optimal for passengers," stated a senior railway official.

Furthermore, all bookings made up to October 31, 2024, under the previous 120-day policy will remain valid.

Passengers can still cancel bookings made beyond the new 60-day limit, ensuring flexibility.

However, certain daytime express trains will not be affected by this change.

On the other hand, the 365-day advance reservation for foreign tourists will remain unchanged.

Interestingly, this decision is based on historical data and passenger behavior patterns.

"We’ve seen a 21% cancellation rate and 4-5% no-shows with the longer booking window," the official explained.

The new policy is expected to reduce ticket blocking and fraud significantly.

In addition, it will provide better visibility of demand for railway planning purposes.

Meanwhile, the impact on General class tickets is anticipated to be minimal.

"General class bookings are typically last-minute and won’t be affected," clarified a railway spokesperson.

Overall, this change aims to enhance the travel experience while improving resource management for Indian Railways.
