Breast Cancer Awareness Month Kicks Off in Jamshedpur

MTMH and Rotary Club West launch month-long campaign for early detection

Key Points:

• WHO designates October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in India

• MTMH offers free mammography screenings during awareness sessions

JAMSHEDPUR – Medical institutions in the city initiate a comprehensive breast cancer awareness campaign to promote early detection and prevention strategies.

The World Health Organization has designated October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer has surpassed cervical cancer as the most prevalent cancer among women in India.

Moreover, it accounts for one-fourth of all cancer cases in women globally.

On the other hand, 70% of breast cancer deaths occur in areas with limited resources.

In addition, late diagnosis due to lack of awareness leads to poor treatment outcomes in India.

Most breast cancer patients in the country are diagnosed at stage three or four.

Meanwhile, established screening guidelines exist but remain largely unknown to women.

This year’s WHO theme is "No one should face breast cancer alone."

MTMH, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West, has planned a month-long campaign.

The initiative aims to raise awareness and promote early screening for breast cancer.

Furthermore, awareness sessions will be conducted in colleges, schools, and women’s clubs.

These sessions will emphasize symptoms, prevention, and the importance of timely check-ups.

Besides, free mammography screenings will be offered to women registered for awareness sessions.

Expert opinions and awareness messages will be broadcasted on radio.

The campaign was inaugurated on October 1st at MTMH OPD by Daisy Irani and Dr. R.N. Sharma.

Dr. Koshi Varghese, MTMH Director, welcomed the guests at the event.

Members from Rotary Club, Inner Wheel, school principals, and Tata Steel Foundation representatives attended.

Dr. Sujata Mitra, MTMH Consultant, presented the campaign’s detailed objectives.

Dr. Tamojit Chaudhuri, Senior Consultant in Medical Oncology, gave a presentation on breast cancer.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sanghamitra Jena, HOD of Surgical Oncology at TMH, highlighted surgical perspectives.

Dr. Amit Mukherjee, President of Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West, shared insights on community awareness.
