Tata Steel’s Demolition Drive Sparks Massive Protests

Residents, political leaders unite against Burmamines Lal Baba Tube Area eviction attempt

Key Points:

• Tata Steel’s bulldozers met with fierce resistance in Lalbaba Foundry

• Political parties rally behind residents, blocking demolition efforts

• Court decision expected as residents seek legal reprieve

JAMSHEDPUR – Tensions erupted as Tata Steel officials arrived with bulldozers to clear alleged encroachments in Lalbaba Foundry, Kailash Nagar, sparking widespread protests from residents and political leaders.

The scene unfolded around 9:30 am when Tata Steel’s demolition team entered Burmamines.

This action ignited immediate resistance from local residents and business owners.

Members of the Lalbaba Foundry Vyapar Sangh quickly organized a sit-in demonstration.

Protesters blocked roads, burned tires, and shouted slogans against Tata Steel’s actions.

The district administration deployed additional police forces, including a Vajra vehicle.

Representatives from various political parties joined the growing protest movement.

The Burmamines main road became paralyzed as crowds swelled, halting traffic for hours.

Political leaders accused Tata Steel and the administration of insensitivity towards residents.

Former MP Dr. Ajoy Kumar confronted district officials, challenging the demolition’s legitimacy.

He questioned the lack of prior notice given to residents before the attempted eviction.

Officials struggled to provide satisfactory answers to Dr. Kumar’s pointed inquiries.

Legal Battle Intensifies

The conflict over Lalbaba Foundry land dates back to a 2006 case filed by Tata Steel.

The company sought removal of alleged illegal encroachments on the disputed 70 decimal plot.

Over 150 warehouses and 1,000 houses currently occupy the contested area.

Residents claim they were not made party to the ongoing Kolkata High Court case.

They are now preparing to file for a stay order to prevent further demolition attempts.

A hearing was held on Friday, with the court’s decision expected on Saturday.

Political Fallout

Dr. Ajoy Kumar criticized local MLA Saryu Roy and MP Bidyut Baran Mahto for their absence.

He accused them of making empty promises and failing to support constituents in need.

"Today, we forced the administration to back down," Dr. Kumar stated defiantly.

He pledged ongoing support and legal assistance to the affected traders and residents.

BJP workers protested Dr. Kumar’s presence, leading to further tensions at the site.

The former MP attributed their agitation to exposed mismanagement under BJP rule.

As the situation remains tense, all eyes are on the Jamshedpur Civil Court’s impending verdict.
