JAMSHEDPUR – Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually launched the Tata-Patna Vande Bharat Express on Sunday, with 27-year-old Ritika Tirkey as its assistant loco pilot.

Tirkey, hailing from Jharkhand’s tribal community, is breaking barriers in the Indian Railways.

She is likely the first tribal woman in India to assist in piloting a Vande Bharat Express.

The mechanical engineer from BIT Mesra joined the railways in 2019 as a shunter.

Tirkey has since progressed to driving goods and passenger trains before her current role.

"I’m extremely happy for this opportunity and shall give my best," Tirkey told the media.

She believes women in India can achieve their goals with passion and determination.

Tirkey’s journey began in Gumla, Jharkhand, before she moved to Jamshedpur with her husband.

Her appointment is seen as a symbol of women empowerment and tribal representation.

Deepak Jha, principal chief operations manager (SER), praised Tirkey’s achievement.

He believes her success will inspire other women, especially from tribal communities.

The Tata-Patna Vande Bharat Express was one of six trains flagged off by PM Modi.

The launch ceremony took place via video conferencing at Tatanagar Junction Railway Station.

Tirkey’s co-pilot for the inaugural run is SS Munda, the loco pilot of the train.

"Women can always lead the way," Tirkey stated, encouraging more women to join the railways.

Her story highlights the changing face of Indian Railways and its push for diversity.

Railway officials hope Tirkey’s success will encourage more women to pursue similar careers.

The Vande Bharat Express, known for its speed and comfort, now has a pioneering crew member.

Tirkey’s appointment aligns with the railways’ efforts to promote inclusivity in its workforce.

Her journey from a small town to piloting India’s premium train serves as an inspiration to many.
