Jamshedpur Water Crisis Addressed in Assembly
MLA Roy highlights Moharda Project issues, water released from Chandil Dam
Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy raises concerns about suspended water supply from Moharda Water Project in Assembly.
JAMSHEDPUR – During the Assembly’s zero hour on Thursday, Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy drew attention to the suspended water supply from the Moharda Water Supply Project.
The project’s intake well has become obstructed by debris due to pollution in the Swarnarekha River.
About 50,000 residents were deprived of potable water for a period of four days.
Roy criticized the Moharda Project’s initial construction, citing the accumulation of refuse during the annual rainy season.
He suggested that water be diverted from Chandil Dam to Dimna Lake for consumption purposes.
The MLA recommended that the water from the Swarnarekha River be reserved for industrial purposes.
On Thursday, 2000 cusecs of water were discharged from Chandil Dam at Roy’s request.
Sanjay Singh, the Executive Engineer of Chandil Dam, verified that water was released from five gates to remove debris.
The well was anticipated to be cleaned and the potable water supply to be restored by the water pressure.
Roy had previously communicated with Water Resources Secretary Prashant Kumar regarding the matter.
He observed that the location of the intake well and the orientation of the pump are factors that contribute to annual obstructions.
It was anticipated that the water would be discharged to alleviate the immediate crisis and restore the water supply.
