Anti-Defection Law Invoked as Assembly Prepares for Final Pre-Election Gathering

The Jharkhand Assembly faces a significant shake-up as two legislators are disqualified under anti-defection laws, setting the stage for a crucial monsoon session.

RANCHI – The Speaker’s Tribunal of the Jharkhand Assembly has taken decisive action, disqualifying two members of the legislative body for violating anti-defection regulations, effective July 26.

This ruling comes on the cusp of the assembly’s monsoon session, slated to begin on Friday.

The disqualified legislators are Lobin Hembrom from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Jai Prakash Bhai Patel of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Assembly Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto rendered the verdict after a two-day hearing process.

The decision followed a thorough examination of written statements provided by both MLAs.

Hembrom faced disqualification for running as an independent in the Rajmahal Lok Sabha constituency.

His candidacy directly challenged the JMM’s official nominee, Vijay Hansdak.

Patel’s disqualification stemmed from his defection to the Congress prior to the Lok Sabha elections.

He contested from Hazaribagh, opposing his former party’s sanctioned candidate, Manish Jaiwal.

Both Hembrom and Patel were unsuccessful in their respective electoral bids.

The JMM initiated proceedings against Hembrom, while the BJP took action against Patel.

This upcoming session marks the final assembly meeting before Jharkhand’s impending state elections.

Speaker Mahto convened an all-party meeting to ensure smooth proceedings during the session.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren and representatives from various parties attended the preparatory gathering.

The BJP’s absence was noted, with only Ranchi MLA CP Singh arriving late to the meeting.

The monsoon session is scheduled to run from July 26 to August 2, spanning six days.
