Illegal mining threatens wildlife habitat in East Singhbhum

Construction activities in protected areas disrupt elephant movement, sparking judicial inquiry into forest management.

JAMSHEDPUR – The highest court in Jharkhand is currently investigating allegations of unauthorized development in important wildlife areas.

An investigation has been launched by the Jharkhand High Court into reported illegal activities taking place in the East Singhbhum Elephant Corridor.

There has been a lot of buzz about some construction projects happening without proper authorization in various areas, such as Chakulia and Ghatshila. A public interest litigation had been filed earlier to address this specific issue.

According to informatino received, the judiciary has asked state authorities to respond by August 12 regarding these allegations.

It may be added here that Sirma Devgan, the petitioner, has expressed serious concerns regarding the participation of forest officials and criminal elements in these illegal activities.

According to the petitioner these activities are supposedly causing elephants to give up their usual paths, leading to more conflicts between humans and wildlife in the area.

The destruction of natural habitats is not cool at all, sources said. It’s like, totally illegal and stuff. And not only that, but it’s also not good for the animals and the local communities, sources add? Like, it’s a big problem and we need to do something about it," said this wildlife expert who really knows their stuff.

The state High Court is currently closely examining this particular matter, with Acting Chief Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Arun Kumar Rai leading the examination.

The petitioner is demanding a full investigation into the situation and wants those responsible to face appropriate consequences.

Conservationists are really hoping that this legal intervention will make a big difference in protecting the region’s biodiversity and keeping the ecosystem in balance.
