GIRIDIH — A roof collapse at a wedding ceremony in Maharaydih village, under the Herodih police station area of Giridih district, injured nearly two dozen people late on Tuesday night, just moments before the customary meeting of the two families was to begin.
The wedding was being held at the residence of one Shamsher Alam of Maharaydih. The groom’s party had arrived from Dhoto village in Devri block.
A large number of guests from both sides had gathered in front of the house and around the balcony area in preparation for the samadhi milan ceremony. It was at this point that the balcony suddenly gave way, trapping several people under the debris.
Villagers, family members, and local elected representatives rushed to the spot and helped pull the injured out of the rubble. All the wounded were rushed to various hospitals in the area.
According to doctors, six of the injured are in a critical condition. Moreover, these six have been referred to Ranchi for better medical care. The remaining injured are receiving treatment at private hospitals in Dhanbad and Giridih.
Herodih police and the Devri circle officer reached the scene immediately after receiving information about the incident. The administration has since launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse.
On a preliminary basis, the dilapidated condition of the balcony or excessive load at the time is being considered as a possible cause. However, the actual reason, officials said, would be determined only after the investigation was complete.
The incident has cast a pall over the entire village. Residents have demanded that the administration ensure proper medical care for all the injured and conduct a fair probe into the collapse.
