BOKARO – A three-storey residential block belonging to Bokaro Steel Plant collapsed on Friday in Sector 12E, narrowly avoiding casualties despite trapping several residents on upper floors, officials said. Quarters numbered 1290 to 1296 in the affected block came crashing down without warning.
Residents on the upper floors found themselves trapped as the structure gave way beneath them. Neighbours and emergency responders worked to bring them down safely, and no injuries or deaths were reported in the incident.
However, the collapse sparked anger among local residents soon after. Many confronted a Bokaro Steel Plant civic services official who arrived at the site, demanding answers over the management’s handling of ageing infrastructure.
Residents alleged that the block had shown clear signs of deterioration for some time, yet the plant management had failed to officially declare it unsafe. They said no arrangements had been made to relocate families living in the block despite the visible risk.
According to locals, the structure had last undergone repair work carried out by BSL in 2024. Many argued that the maintenance had amounted to superficial patchwork rather than a genuine structural fix.
Meanwhile, residents said this was not an isolated case at the plant township. They pointed to a pattern of similar incidents in recent years, alleging that BSL management had repeatedly failed to learn from past structural failures.
Several quarters in Bokaro Steel Plant’s Sector 12 and Sector 8 remain in a dilapidated condition, according to residents. They said minor accidents and structural issues have become a near-routine occurrence in these ageing residential blocks.
The plant’s civic authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the extent of damage or on plans for inspecting other vulnerable blocks in the township. Residents have demanded a comprehensive safety audit of all ageing quarters across the plant’s residential sectors.
