DHANBAD – Three children drowned in a pond on Friday in the Topchanchi police station area of Dhanbad district, leaving their family devastated, officials said. The tragedy occurred at Rangleetand, where the children had gone to bathe in a nearby waterbody.
The deceased were identified as Ralझल, Kundro and Abha. According to family members, the three children regularly visited the same pond to bathe and had gone there again on Friday afternoon.
During the bathing session, one of the girls reportedly moved into deeper water and began struggling to stay afloat. The other two children attempted to pull her to safety but were themselves drawn into the deeper section of the pond in the process.
Within moments, all three children had gone under the water, according to accounts from those present. Local residents rushed to the spot after learning of the incident and jumped into the pond to pull the children out.
Villagers then rushed the three children to Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad for emergency treatment. However, doctors at the facility examined the children and declared all three dead on arrival.
Police reached the scene soon after being alerted and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Officials said the probe would examine the depth of the pond and whether any safety measures existed at the site.
Meanwhile, the family has been left in mourning, with relatives inconsolable over the simultaneous loss of three children. The incident has cast a pall over the entire neighbourhood, residents said.
Drowning incidents involving children bathing in unsupervised ponds and waterbodies have been reported periodically across rural parts of Jharkhand, particularly during the monsoon season when water levels rise. Local authorities have in the past urged families to keep close watch over children near unfenced ponds and rivers.
