JAMSHEDPUR – A lift at MGM Hospital, Kolhan’s largest government facility, suddenly stopped midway on Saturday, trapping around 20 to 25 people inside.
The hospital has faced repeated complaints from patients and their families over its facilities. This incident renewed concerns despite official claims of improved healthcare services.
Panic broke out among the trapped patients and their relatives as soon as the lift halted. Several people remained stuck inside for some time, facing considerable distress.
Hospital staff and technical personnel rushed to the spot after being informed of the incident. They launched a rescue effort and, after considerable effort, managed to bring everyone out safely.
Eyewitnesses said the trapped group included several patients, elderly individuals and their family members. Some of them reportedly began feeling unwell due to suffocation and fear inside the stalled lift.
However, all the trapped people were rescued in time. No major mishap was reported from the incident.
This is not the first time a lift has malfunctioned at MGM Hospital. Technical faults in the hospital’s lifts have surfaced on several occasions in the past too.
Such repeated incidents have raised questions over the hospital’s maintenance system and safety standards. Patients and their families have now demanded regular inspection and repair of the lifts.
They said this was necessary to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. It would also help avert any major accident in the future.
