Family Alleges Half-Hour Wait for Medical Help After Delivery

JAMSHEDPUR – Family members alleged that a woman and her newborn waited close to half an hour for medical assistance after she delivered her baby inside a tempo at MGM Hospital’s main gate on Saturday.
The incident has once again raised questions over the hospital’s emergency preparedness. It occurred at the city’s premier government medical facility.
Neha Parveen, a resident of Jugsalai, had been suffering from labour pain before the delivery. She was initially taken to Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Doctors there cited a possible blood deficiency and the likely need for an operation. She was consequently referred to MGM Hospital for further care.
She was then taken to the Jugsalai Community Health Centre. However, doctors there too referred her onward to MGM Hospital for better treatment.
According to her family, no ambulance was made available for the transfer. They were compelled to use a tempo to reach the hospital instead.
The journey was delayed further by poor road conditions. A traffic jam near the Mango bridge also slowed their progress toward the hospital.
Labour pain intensified during the journey. As the tempo reached the main gate of MGM Hospital, Neha gave birth to the child inside the vehicle itself.
Family members said they immediately informed hospital staff and nurses about the delivery. However, no one arrived to help for a considerable period of time.
“The mother and the newborn remained in the tempo for nearly half an hour,” a family member said. A nurse eventually reached the spot and had the two admitted to the gynaecology and obstetrics department.
Following an examination at the hospital, doctors declared both the mother and the newborn to be in good health. People present during the incident also questioned the hospital’s arrangements.
They said immediate medical assistance should have been provided in an emergency situation like childbirth. Moreover, this is not the first such case reported outside MGM Hospital’s premises.
An earlier incident had seen another woman give birth inside a Sumo vehicle before she could reach the hospital. The latest case has again brought scrutiny on the hospital’s emergency services and its arrangements for timely assistance to maternity patients.
