JAMSHEDPUR – A young man was killed in a tragic road accident in the Potka police station area of East Singhbhum district on Sunday. The incident occurred near Pawaru turn on the Tata-Hata main road, where an out-of-control truck ran over the man as he walked along the road.
The collision was so severe that the victim died instantly at the spot. He has been identified as Suman Mandal, a resident of Urugutu in the Rajnagar police station area.
According to eyewitnesses, Mandal was walking along the roadside when the speeding truck went out of control and struck him. The driver fled the scene with the vehicle immediately after the accident, while people from the surrounding area gathered at the spot.
Angered by the incident, villagers blocked the Tata-Hata main road, demanding adequate compensation for the deceased’s family and strict action against the driver responsible. The blockade caused long queues of vehicles to build up on both sides of the road, disrupting traffic entirely.
Potka police reached the scene as soon as they were informed and began efforts to bring the situation under control. Officers held discussions with the villagers and the victim’s family in an attempt to pacify them.
However, at the time of filing this report, the road blockade was still ongoing, with the administration continuing its efforts to calm the crowd. Similar protests have followed other fatal road accidents in the region recently, including a bike-minibus collision in Ramgarh that also saw NH-33 blocked over compensation demands.
Police have taken the body into custody and begun the process of sending it for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the causes of the accident are also under investigation.
The area remains gripped by grief and anger in the aftermath of the incident. Officials said further details are expected to emerge once the inquiry progresses.
