Tata Steel’s FAMD Wins Kalinga Environment Excellence Award for Sustainable Practices

Sukinda Chromite Mine Recognized for Outstanding Achievements in Environmental Conservation

Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) has been honored with the prestigious Kalinga Environment Excellence Award for its exceptional contributions to environmental conservation and sustainable development practices at its Sukinda Chromite Mine.

BHUBANESWAR – The award was presented to the company during the 9th National Conclave on Environment, Energy, and Climate Change, organized by the Institute of Quality and Environment Management Services (IQEMS) and Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE), Hyderabad, at a city hotel on Saturday.

Shambhu Nath Jha, Chief (Mines), FAMD, and Biswaranjan Dhal, Assistant Manager (Environment), FAMD, received the award on behalf of Tata Steel from the distinguished guest, Her Excellency Lebohang Valentine Mochaba, High Commissioner of the Kingdom of Lesotho.

The Sukinda Chromite Mine was recognized in the Five Star category for the Performance Year 2023, acknowledging its outstanding achievements in environmental conservation and sustainable development practices.

Accelerating Land Restoration, Drought Resilience, and Desertification Progress

The conclave brought together esteemed environmentalists, sustainability champions, and industry stalwarts to deliberate on pressing issues related to environment, energy, and climate change.

Pankaj Satija, Executive-In-charge (FAMD), Tata Steel, expressed gratitude to the jury for the recognition and emphasized the interconnectedness of water, energy, food, and climate change.

He highlighted Tata Steel’s efforts in implementing smart water management systems to enhance water use efficiency and make water available for other sectors.

The company is also working on recovering value from waste, such as using Ferro Chrome Slag chips instead of quarry aggregates for road construction within the plant, promoting safe vehicle movement.

Tata Steel’s use of energy-efficient equipment and cleaner fuel aims to reduce its carbon footprint, contributing to the greater cause of environmental sustainability.

Collaborations for Cleaner Fuel and Advanced Energy Management

In its pursuit to further minimize its carbon footprint, Tata Steel has signed agreements with GAIL (India) Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for cleaner fuel at its Ferro Alloys Plants.

Additionally, the steel major has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French Cleantech company METRON to design and implement an advanced energy management and optimization platform.

These collaborations demonstrate Tata Steel’s commitment to adopting cleaner technologies and optimizing energy consumption to reduce its environmental impact.
