Spice Adulteration Menaces Jamshedpur

Health Hazard Looms with Tainted Spices in City

Adulterated spices pose a significant health risk in Jamshedpur, with authorities seizing contaminated products and warning of potential chronic diseases.

JAMSHEDPUR – A recent raid in Harharguttu, Bagbera, by the Food Safety Department has unveiled a large operation involved in the production and distribution of adulterated spices across key market areas.

Wood sawdust and artificial coloring found mixed with spices during a Food Safety Department raid raise serious health concerns, with laboratory analysis pending to assess contamination levels.

Shockingly, even branded spices are not immune to adulteration, highlighting a city-wide issue that affects both unbranded and packaged spice products.

Adulterants such as red brick dust in red chili powder and Metanil Yellow in turmeric powder underscore the risks, including cancer, associated with consuming compromised products.

Experts warn of the dangers of adulterated spices, like coriander powder with husk and cinnamon mixed with guava bark, urging vigilance among consumers.

Dr. Arun Kumar, a cancer specialist, advises the public to steer clear of adulterated food items, emphasizing the health implications of such practices.

The pervasive adulteration of spices in Jamshedpur, especially during festival seasons, highlights the need for increased awareness and stringent enforcement of food safety standards.
