Jamshedpur Restaurants Introduce Braille Menus for Visually Impaired

CII Young Indians Launches Initiative to Promote Inclusivity and Accessibility

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Young Indians Jamshedpur Chapter has launched an initiative to introduce Braille menus in restaurants across the city, making dining out more accessible for the visually impaired.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a significant step towards promoting inclusivity, eleven restaurants in Jamshedpur have started presenting menu cards in Braille script, enabling visually impaired individuals to independently place their orders.

The initiative, spearheaded by the CII Young Indians Accessibility Team, was launched on Tuesday, March 19th, following discussions with restaurant operators.

Brown Town Roastery Cafe, Little Italy, Mocha, Oxygen, Tonik, Kaidi Kitchen, Prabhuji, Bon Appetite, The Dugout, Unplugged, and Shizki are among the first restaurants to adopt the Braille menus.

Ankita Naredi, Chair of the Accessibility Vertical at Young Indians Jamshedpur, emphasized the transformative impact of this initiative on the lives of visually impaired individuals in the city.

"We’ve specially ordered Braille menu cards from Chandigarh," stated Naredi, encouraging other restaurants to embrace inclusivity by offering Braille menus and seeking assistance from Yi members in acquiring them.

On the launch day, visually impaired children from Divyajyoti Netraheen Sansthan were invited to experience the Braille menus firsthand, marking a memorable moment for all involved.

Shilpa Dhanuka, Co-Chair of Accessibility at Young Indians Jamshedpur, described the children’s excitement and expressions as "priceless" when they read the menu cards for the first time in their lives.

Randeep Singh, Secretary of the Jamshedpur Hotel and Restaurant Association (JHRA), expressed support for the initiative, stating, "JHRA will encourage other restaurants to use Braille menu cards."

The absence of accessible menu alternatives has long posed challenges for visually impaired individuals, but the introduction of Braille menus in Jamshedpur’s restaurants marks a significant step towards creating a more inclusive dining experience for all.
