Tribal Group Sets Ultimatum for Sarna Dharma Code
Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan Demands Government Recognition of Sarna Code by March 31, Threatens Bharat Bandh
Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan demands Sarna Dharma Code recognition by March 31, 2024, warns of indefinite Bharat Bandh from April 7 if ignored.
JAMSHEDPUR – Salkhan Murmu, National President of Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan, warned of a nationwide indefinite shutdown from April 7 if the Sarna religion isn’t officially recognized by March 31, 2024.
He criticized the ongoing neglect of tribal religious freedoms and cited the irony of Uttar Pradesh having the largest tribal population without their religious rights being acknowledged.
Murmu highlighted the historical use of the Sarna religion code in the 1951 census and its subsequent discontinuation under the Congress government.
He expressed disappointment with President Draupadi Murmu for not showing empathy towards the Sarna religious code.
Despite this, he appreciated Union Minister Arjun Munda’s suggestion and supported it.
Murmu has called upon religious leaders, civil society, and the central government to clarify their stance on tribal religious freedom by March 31.
He noted that political parties have remained silent on this issue, which involves the alleged conversion of tribals as part of a conspiracy.
The Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan’s demand underscores the tribal community’s struggle for recognition and religious freedom.
