Promoting Sports & Fitness Among Elders: Tata Steel’s New Initiative Hits a Smash

Tata Steel’s Senior Citizen Fun & Fitness League 2023 hosts successful Badminton Championship, bridging the age gap in sports and fostering a culture of active aging in Jamshedpur.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a groundbreaking move, Tata Steel’s Sports Department rolled out a Badminton Championship under the banner of the Senior Citizen Fun & Fitness League 2023.

The championship saw overwhelming involvement from Jamshedpur’s senior citizen community.

Taking the helm as the Chief Guest was Sudhansu Pathak, Former Vice President Steel Manufacturing of Tata Steel, who was accompanied by Mukul Vinayak Choudhari, Chief of Sports Excellence Centre at Tata Steel.

With 34 eager participants, the event was a display of untapped talent among seniors; 32 men competed in singles, while two women graced the women’s singles category.

Asha Hariharan, a 62-year-old resident of Sakchi, clinched the women’s singles title, with Bitihika Das from Dimna Road following as runner-up.

In the men’s singles arena, Mukesh Vishwakarma from Sonari emerged victorious, while Tinu Dubey, also from Sonari, and Amar Kumar from Baridih earned runners-up spots.

Hemant Gupta, who heads Adventure Programmes & Sports at Tata Steel, had the honor of awarding the triumphant athletes.

Targeting seniors, the league underscores the integral role they play in shaping society and influencing younger generations.

The event aimed to ignite a culture of physical activity among seniors, spotlighting active aging as a conduit to maintaining physical and mental well-being.

The championship’s successful outcome not only demonstrated Tata Steel’s commitment to elevating sports and fitness across all age demographics but also provided a competitive yet congenial platform for senior citizens.
