Tata Steel Meramandali Wins CII Award for Innovative Environmental Initiative

Recognised for "Sustainable Utilisation of LD Sludge in Pellet", Tata Steel Meramandali earns CII National Award for Environmental Best Practices 2023.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel Meramandali (TSM), located in the Dhenkanal region of Odisha, has been honoured with the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) National Award for Environmental Best Practises 2023. Their revolutionary initiative, "Sustainable Utilisation of LD Sludge in Pellet," was crowned "Most Innovative initiative" at the award’s 10th anniversary.

Susavan Ghosal, Senior Manager, Sales & New Business Development, Amit Ranjan, Chief, Marketing & Sales, Industrial By-product Management Division (IBMD), Tata Steel, Ritesh Kumar, Head, Marketing & Business Development, IBMD, and Susavan Ghosal accepted the award on behalf of TSM during a grand ceremony in Pune.

As part of its ongoing commitment to foster sustainable waste reduction and reuse practices, TSM has been addressing the issue of handling solid wastes generated by its steelmaking operations, contributing to the circular economy. LD sludge, a byproduct of the steelmaking process in a basic oxygen furnace (BOF), used to pose recycling challenges due to its high zinc concentration.

However, TSM’s innovative approach of incorporating LD sludge into the pellet manufacturing process has brought about a revolutionary change in LD sludge management. In doing so, TSM has not only tackled waste management issues but has also significantly enhanced operational efficiency.

In reaction to the accolade, Subodh Pandy, Vice President Operations, Tata Steel Meramandali, New Material Business, and Graphene, said, "This honour recognises our innovation and sustainability efforts in steelmaking, as we recycle and reuse LD sludge, reduce waste, conserve resources, cut emissions, and boost competitiveness. We appreciate the faith and support extended to CII by our customers, partners, team members, and local communities. We dedicate this award to them and to the sustainable development of India’s steel industry."

By effectively using waste LD Sludge, Tata Steel is setting an example for the steel industry, thus minimising its adverse environmental impacts.

The CII award serves to acknowledge organisations that make substantial and measurable contributions towards the development or application of cleaner technologies, processes, or practices aimed at environmental protection, promoting resource conservation and pollution prevention.
