UPU to Evaluate UPI for Cross-Border Postal Network Remittances
The Universal Postal Union will assess the integration of UPI with postal channels for international remittances, strengthening India’s financial inclusion drive.
DESK – A meeting took place today between Masahiko Metoki, the director general of the Universal Postal Union (DG UPU), and Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of communications, electronics and information technology.
The purpose of Mr. Metoki’s three-day visit to India is to open the UPU Regional Office.
During the meeting, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw discussed how post offices in India have been transformed into a digital network that delivers government services to people’s doorsteps in remote locations.
The minister highlighted how the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) have turned Indian post offices into successful models for promoting financial inclusion.
The DG UPU appreciated India’s transformation of physical post offices on the backbone of the country’s digital infrastructure, encouraging the replication of similar models in other nations.
Further, Mr. Metoki pledged to evaluate the use of UPI for integration with postal channels for international remittances.
