Vegetable Prices Soar in Jamshedpur: Household Budgets Hit Hard

Jamshedpur vegetable markets see unprecedented price hike, significantly affecting household budgets as salad ingredients double in cost.

JAMSHEDPUR – The first monsoon rains have barely started, but the inflation of vegetables is already setting new records.

The vegetable mandis across Jamshedpur city are seeing a steep rise in prices, causing considerable strain on people’s budgets.

Green vegetables are more expensive in smaller mandis than in the larger ones, with prices increasing from Rs 10 to Rs 50. In some cases, vegetable prices have even doubled.

The Price Hike Phenomenon

Markets in Sakchi, Mango, Golmuri, Badidih, Sidhgora, and other areas of Jamshedpur are witnessing skyrocketing vegetable prices. Sellers report that in the last ten days, all green vegetables, except potatoes and onions, have increased in price. Some vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and bitter gourd, have doubled in cost, with a prediction for further increase.

Reasons Behind the Price Surge

Most of the green vegetables available in the market are locally sourced, but due to decreased production over the last 15 days, prices have risen. High transportation rates have also contributed to the price increase. Moreover, with the rainy season in sight, vegetable prices are expected to surge further.

Price Increase Over the Last 15 Days

The cost of several vegetables, including cucumber, Bhindi, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, garlic, and ginger, has risen considerably. For instance, the price per kilogram of cucumber has increased from Rs 40 to Rs 60-80, and ginger has jumped from Rs 230-250 to Rs 300.

Current Market Rates for Vegetables

A quick look at the current market prices per kilogram for a variety of vegetables: Potato – Rs 20, Onion – Rs 22, Brinjal – Rs 50 to 80, Tomato – Rs 60 to 80, Shimla – Rs 140 to 160, Cucumber – Rs 60 to 80, Beans – Rs 140 to 150, Ginger – Rs 300, Garlic – Rs 130 to 150.
