Jamshedpur – In a beautiful display of tradition, Sanatan samskar and love, Hindu women in Jamshedpur are today celebrating Vat Savitri Puja, a festival that honours married life and family prosperity.

The festival, which holds similar importance to the Karva Chauth, is observed by fasting and worshipping the Vat (banyan) tree.

According to the Hindu calendar, Vat Savitri Vrat is observed on the new moon day, or Amavasya, of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyestha.

This year, the Amavasya Tithi began on May 18 at 09:42 pm and will end on May 19 at 09:22 pm. Therefore, the Vat Savitri Vrat is being observed today, May 19.

During this fast, women traditionally abstain from eating and drinking – a practice known as Nirjala fast – with the aim of ensuring the longevity of their husbands and the happiness and prosperity of their households.

This fast is only observed once a year on the Amavasya Tithi.
