Jamshedpur floods: skies start pouring again as apprehensions soar high

NDRF team ready, about 4000 people from both the districts evacuated, flood water enters about 2000 houses of Jamshedpur city

Jamshedpur: The rains had stopped for about 10 hours raising hopes that the flood situation may improve slowly bringing a huge relief to the affected residents.

However, that was not to be as the skies started pouring again giving rise to fresh apprehensions of a likely worsening in flood situation in riverine areas of Jamshedpur.

People affected by floods and water logging were hopeful about an improvement in the situation as the rains stopped for about 10 hours during night and early Sunday morning.

But, it started raining again around 2 pm Sunday. And the apprehensions started rising once again.

The two major rivers of the city, Swarnrekha and Kharkai, have been in spate after torrential rains started lashing Jamshedpur and its surrounding areas for the last 3 days.

Both the rivers, even now, are flowing above the danger mark.

After about 14 years, the citizens saw the fierce form of both the rivers.

Throughout Saturday night, people from the areas adjacent to rivers were forced to stay on roads and in shelter homes.

Although the weather has cleared a little on Sunday, it has left behind a scene of devastation, which may take weeks to deal with.

Gradually, there was a slight drop in the water level of both the rivers. However, fresh rains have raised the apprehensions again.

Many neighborhoods and riverine areas are still submerged.

Affected citizens are assessing their losses. Politics is also at its peak. The administration claims that it is engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. However, not too many agree with this in the affected areas.

The NDRF team has also been kept ready.

So far, about 4000 people from both the districts have been shifted to a safe place.

Flood water has entered about 2000 houses in Jamshedpur city.

On the other hand, dozens of villages in Ichagarh assembly constituency are still submerged. People are imprisoned in their homes.

The administration is also facing difficulties in relief and rescue operations.

In such a situation, it would not be impertinent to ask who is responsible for this?

What causes such inundation every year in the riverine areas? What impedes the flow of rivers?

The administration as well as the people of the city would have to find an answer to this some day.
