Dreaded gangster Vikas Dubey killed in encounter near Kanpur after accident

New Delhi: The most wanted gangster of Uttar Pradesh, who was arrested yesterday morning in Ujjain’s Mahakal Mandir area, has been killed in an encounter with the police after he tried to escape soon after a road accident. He was absconding after having killed eight police personnel in Bikru village of Kanpur.

According to sources, the car in which the STF motorcade was bringing Vikas Dubey to Kanpur had an accident and overturned near Barra area of Kanpur Friday early morning. The area is one hour drive from Kanpur city.

Taking advantage of the situation, Vikas Dubey tried to escape and the STF team shot at him to prevent his escape. He was killed as a result.

Vikas Dubey was arrested on Thursday at Ujjain.

Vikas Dubey’s killing of eight police personnel had sent a wave of shock throughout the country and the nexus of criminals with shelter-providers had sparked off an intense debate.

There was anger within the ranks of the UP Police, as the incident was being seen as a big challenge to the authority of police and law and order system.

Subsequent probe into the incident by the UP police have also highlighted connivance of many police personnel with the gangster and tip-offs given to him in helping him to escape. Demand for action against such erring personnel has also been raised by experts.
