JAMSHEDPUR – A deeply distressing incident took place near the Dhatkidih pond in the Bistupur police station area on Thursday afternoon, when an elderly man allegedly doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire amid a prolonged family dispute. The man survived only because of the swift action of bystanders and, in particular, a young man present at the spot.

The victim, identified as Sattar Khan, a resident of Dhatkidih A Block, arrived near the pond carrying petrol and poured it over himself before setting himself alight. The flames spread rapidly, triggering panic in the surrounding area.

Mo. Islam, who works washing vehicles near the Dhatkidih area, responded immediately and without hesitation began trying to extinguish the flames. With help from other locals, the fire was eventually brought under control after considerable effort, and the critically burned elderly man was pulled to safety.

Bistupur police reached the scene promptly after receiving information about the incident. Khan was rushed to Tata Main Hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors have described his condition as serious, with a large portion of his body having sustained burn injuries.

According to local residents, Sattar Khan had been under severe mental stress owing to a family dispute that had persisted for a long time. His family members reached the hospital after receiving news of the incident. Police have recovered charred clothing and other remnants from the scene and have launched an investigation.
