Auto Union Writes to DC Seeking Approval for First Fare Hike since 2021
Key Points:
- Shikshit Berozgar Tempo Chalak-Sanchalak Sangh announces Rs 5 fare hike from June 12
- First revision in auto fares in Jamshedpur since 2021, union cites rising fuel costs
- Daily commuters may face up to Rs 300 extra monthly expenditure if hike takes effect
JAMSHEDPUR – Auto passengers in Jamshedpur could face higher fares from June 12, as the Shikshit Berozgar Tempo Chalak-Sanchalak Sangh has announced a hike of up to Rs 5 on various routes across the city. The union has submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner informing the administration of the revised fare structure it intends to implement.
The union has cited the continuous rise in diesel and CNG prices, vehicle maintenance costs, spare parts expenses and other operational overheads as reasons behind the proposed increase. According to the auto union, this would be the first fare revision since 2021. However, the final decision on the new rates will be clear only after the administration gives its approval.
If the proposed hike comes into effect, thousands of daily commuters in the city — including students and salaried workers — would face an additional financial burden. Passengers who use autos twice a day for their daily commute would end up spending around Rs 10 more per day. On a monthly basis, this could add up to nearly Rs 300 in extra expenditure, affecting the household budgets of common people across the city.
Meanwhile, the union’s move has drawn attention at a time when fuel prices in Jamshedpur have seen repeated increases in recent months. Petrol had touched Rs 101.64 and diesel Rs 96.61 per litre in the city during May. The rising fuel costs have been a persistent concern for transport operators across Jharkhand.
