Jamshedpur Traders Protest JNAC Rent Hike Without Consultation

Jamshedpur All Market Association Demands Immediate Rollback of Rent Increase

Key Points:

  • Traders protest outside JNAC office against sudden market rent hike
  • Association demands immediate rollback and consultation before any revision
  • Small shopkeepers say rent hike adds to existing economic hardship

JAMSHEDPUR – Traders from various markets across Jamshedpur staged a strong demonstration outside the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee office on Tuesday, protesting a sudden and steep hike in market rents imposed by the civic body.

The agitation was held under the banner of the Jamshedpur All Market Association.

A large number of shopkeepers turned up to register their anger. They raised slogans against the administration outside the JNAC office.

The traders alleged that the rent hike was imposed without any prior notice. Moreover, no discussion was held with market associations before the decision was taken.

“This is completely unjust,” said an association office-bearer. “The administration has burdened us without any dialogue whatsoever.”

Traders from Bistupur, Sakchi, and other commercial areas took part in the demonstration. They said market conditions were already sluggish.

On the other hand, small shopkeepers said they were already under significant financial pressure. A sudden rental increase, they argued, would push many of them to the brink.

“Business has been slow for some time now,” said a trader from the city’s commercial belt. “An abrupt rent revision at this point is impossible for small merchants to absorb.”

Association office-bearers warned that the JNAC decision would severely worsen the financial condition of small and medium shopkeepers. They noted that the civic body had not offered any rationale for the hike.

In contrast, the association stated that rents should be revised only through a transparent consultative process. They demanded that the hike be rolled back without delay.

The association also demanded a formal meeting with the administration. They said a fair solution could only be arrived at through dialogue with market representatives.

The Jugsalai market traders too were among those who joined the protest.

Meanwhile, the administration had not issued any official response to the protesters’ demands as of Tuesday evening. The JNAC has faced mounting pushback from traders and business owners in recent months over various civic decisions.

The Jamshedpur All Market Association warned that if their demands were not addressed, they would escalate the agitation further. They said a formal memorandum would also be submitted to the district administration in the coming days.
