JAMSHEDPUR – A woman identified as Barkha Agarwal was found dead by hanging in her flat at Astha Twin City, Almond Block, under Birsanagar police station area on Wednesday night.
Police said the 2010-married woman lived alone in Jamshedpur with her two children while her husband, Mukesh Agarwal, worked in Singapore. He had recently returned home on leave. However, during the incident, no one was present at the house.
According to Barkha’s brother Varun, the family was informed by her in-laws about the tragedy. On reaching Mercy Hospital from Ghatshila within an hour, he found no one from her in-laws’ side present there. He alleged that the absence raised suspicions.
Varun stated that his sister had hanged herself using a saree. The woman’s son discovered the incident and, with help from neighbors and a relative, took the body down and brought it to Mercy Hospital. Later, she was shifted to MGM Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s parental family alleged that Barkha was under mental pressure due to harassment from her in-laws and may have been driven to suicide. They claimed something “unnatural” had happened and demanded a full investigation.
Police conducted the post-mortem at MGM Medical College on Thursday and handed over the body to the family. Officials confirmed that the cause of death will be determined after the report. Barkha’s husband, when questioned, refused to comment.
The Birsanagar police have begun an investigation into the case and are verifying the statements of family members and neighbors.
