SERAIKELA – Excise officials detained liquor mafia Bapi Das in a dramatic raid at Gamharia market late Sunday night and sent him to judicial custody on Monday.
The action was launched under directives from the Seraikela-Kharsawan Deputy Commissioner. Das had been openly selling illicit Mahua liquor in the busy Gamharia area. However, repeated reports about his activities reached the district administration.
Meanwhile, excise inspector Neeraj Kumar confirmed that the team seized about 20 litres of illegal Mahua liquor during the operation. “The department acted strictly despite pressure from local mediators,” said a reliable source.
Besides, attempts were made by some intermediaries to secure Das’s release, but the department remained firm. On the other hand, the arrest has triggered panic among other local liquor traders involved in illegal sales.
Officials noted that the operation aimed to curb the widespread illicit liquor trade thriving in the industrial belt. Further raids are expected soon across nearby localities.
