Senior Postal Officials Investigate Crore-Rupee Fraud Involving 19 Accounts

JAMSHEDPUR – A major fraud involving crores of rupees in 19 recurring deposit accounts at Narwa Pahar UCIL Colony sub-post office in East Singhbhum has come under investigation.
Senior postal superintendent Uday Bhan Singh and assistant superintendent R.K. Das visited the branch on Wednesday. They spoke with affected customers and reviewed records.
According to officials, customers deposited amounts ranging from ₹40,000 to ₹5 lakh over five years. However, entries were not made in the computer system. Many mistook alleged agent Kapil Bhakt for official staff and handed him their passbooks.
Officials said Bhakt kept the money and updated passbooks with stamps but withheld deposits. Lax local postmaster Raj Majhi will face departmental action. Refunds will be processed within 90 days for verified claims.
The case surfaced after Bhakt was arrested by Jadugoda police in a cybercrime case. Customers then checked their accounts and discovered missing funds. Victims said Bhakt had retained their passbooks for two years, collecting deposits but using them for personal gain.
