SERAIKELA – A residential flat in the TAYO Rolls Mill complex, located in Gamharia, Seraikela-Kharsawan district, collapsed on Monday. The flat, which housed 16 units, was fortunately vacant, preventing any loss of life or injuries.
Immediate Response to Collapse
The incident caused panic among residents in the area, leading to a swift response from Tata Steel officials and Gamharia police.
Rescue operations began promptly to assess the situation and prevent further risks. The collapsed building had previously been deemed unsafe by the company and marked as condemned.
The TAYO housing complex has remained a point of concern since the company’s closure, with former employees and their families occupying the units despite warnings. Officials have refrained from commenting on the incident.
Regarding the incident at TGS Colony, Gamharia, a company source said: “This evening, two buildings in the TGS colony located in Gamharia, Seraikela Kharsawan, collapsed. The buildings belonged to Tayo Rolls company and had already been declared unsafe and unfit for habitation.”
The source added: “We confirm that there have been no casualties. The emergency response team is on-site, assessing the situation and ensuring the area remains secured and safe.”
Residents Express Frustration
Families who had vacated the flats earlier, citing safety concerns, expressed their anger over the lack of timely demolition of the hazardous structures. “The company declared these flats unsafe, yet no concrete steps were taken to avoid such mishaps,” said a former employee who wished to remain anonymous.
Background of the Residential Complex
TAYO Rolls Mill, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, ceased operations years ago. Many former employees who had not settled their accounts with the company continued to reside in the complex. Despite repeated warnings and visible structural risks, the lack of proactive measures led to today’s collapse.
Further investigations are expected, and local authorities have urged caution around the area.
