JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel will retire Coke Oven Battery #7, India’s first stamp-charge coke oven battery, on January 27, 2025. This decision marks the end of a remarkable 36-year service period.

The battery, commissioned in 1989, was a revolutionary innovation in coke-making. Over its lifetime, it produced more than 12 million tonnes of coke, contributing significantly to sustainable practices and industry benchmarks.

Decommissioning Protocols Highlight Safety Measures

The decommissioning process will involve isolating the battery from the By-Product Plant’s gas network. Flaring will begin at 9:00 AM IST and continue for 24 hours, following standard safety protocols. Tata Steel has reassured the public that this controlled activity is safe and should not be mistaken for an emergency.

This announcement aims to ensure that the flaring process is understood as part of the planned retirement procedure. The company emphasized the importance of transparency to avoid public concern.
