RANCHI – Salima Tete, Jharkhand’s star hockey player and Indian women’s team captain, has been named for the prestigious Arjuna Award for 2024.
The Sports Ministry’s announcement marks a historic moment for Jharkhand sports. Salima emerged from humble beginnings in Badki Chhapar village of Simdega district.
“This recognition will inspire countless young girls from rural areas to pursue their sporting dreams,” remarked a senior sports official.
Journey to Excellence
Her remarkable journey began in 2010 when local talent scout Manoj Konbegi discovered her potential. Moreover, her father, Sulakshan Tete, played hockey at the local level.
Furthermore, Salima’s versatility on the field has been exceptional. She has showcased her skills as a defender, midfielder, and forward.
Rising Through Ranks
In contrast to many athletes, Salima’s rise has been meteoric since 2016. She joined the Junior Indian Hockey Women’s Team that year.
Meanwhile, she took over the national team’s captaincy from Savita Punia in May 2024. This leadership role preceded her Arjuna Award selection.
Legacy and Impact
On the other hand, Salima follows the footsteps of hockey legend Michael Kindo from Jharkhand. Additionally, four athletes will receive the prestigious Khel Ratna award alongside the Arjuna Awards.
Hockey India President Bhola Nath Singh has praised her achievement. Besides, this recognition has brought immense pride to Simdega’s hockey community.
