JAMSHEDPUR – BJP MP Bidyut Varan Mahato has accused Congress of spreading falsehoods and using Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s name for vote-bank politics. Addressing a press conference, Mahato said Congress has a history of disrespecting Ambedkar’s principles and suppressing his contributions.
Mahato alleged that Congress had conspired against Dr. Ambedkar in elections, particularly in 1952 and 1954, to defeat him. He criticized Congress for failing to honor Ambedkar with the Bharat Ratna during its tenure, instead conferring it on its own leaders. “It was the BJP-backed government in 1990 that truly recognized Ambedkar’s contribution by awarding him the Bharat Ratna,” he said.
BJP Highlights Legacy Initiatives
The MP emphasized the BJP’s respect for Ambedkar’s ideals, citing initiatives like the development of five pilgrimage sites associated with Ambedkar and the establishment of the Dr. Ambedkar International Center. He also pointed out that Prime Minister Modi declared November 26 as Constitution Day in 2015, marking a significant gesture towards honoring Ambedkar’s legacy.
Mahato criticized Congress for overlooking Ambedkar’s role in history while focusing on building memorials for its own leaders. He mentioned a controversial depiction in a 2012 NCERT textbook during the UPA-2 regime, where Ambedkar was shown in a derogatory light, adding that Congress remained silent on the issue.
Accusations of Divisive Politics
Mahato accused Congress of attempting to divide society by distorting Home Minister Amit Shah’s statements. He labeled these actions as part of Congress’s “toolkit politics” to create confusion among the public. He also alleged that Congress consistently weakened democratic and constitutional values, citing the Emergency and opposition to reservation policies as examples.
“Congress’s drama and crocodile tears over Ambedkar have been exposed,” Mahato said, adding that BJP remains committed to safeguarding Ambedkar’s ideals.
