SERAIKELA – Two wild elephants engaged in a fierce hour-long battle in Bagdi village of Nimdih block, causing significant crop damage and drawing crowds of onlookers.

A wild elephant herd has been frequently visiting the Nimdih block region. According to forest officials, such territorial fights are common during the mating season.

Moreover, the elephants trampled nearly one acre of standing crops during their confrontation. “The economic impact on local farmers is significant, especially during the harvest season,” a local agricultural officer stated.

Growing Human-Elephant Conflict

In recent years, Seraikela-Kharsawan district has witnessed an increase in elephant movement. Meanwhile, the forest department has recorded over 20 such incidents in the past year.

Furthermore, local authorities have established early warning systems in vulnerable villages. On the other hand, compensation mechanisms are in place for crop damage by wild animals.

Safety Measures Implemented

The forest department has deployed special tracking teams in the region. Additionally, villagers have been advised to avoid confronting wild elephants.

“We are implementing various measures to minimize human-elephant conflicts,” a forest department official explained. However, the challenge remains significant due to shrinking forest corridors.
