MEDININAGAR – Construction industry stakeholders in Palamu, led by CPI district secretary Ruchir Kumar Tiwari, submitted a memorandum to the SDO demanding resumption of sand mining operations.
The local construction sector has come to a virtual standstill due to the ongoing sand crisis. “The extended suspension of sand mining has severely impacted thousands of families dependent on the construction industry,” a local businessman stated.
Impact on Local Economy
The crisis has affected various stakeholders in the region. Small transporters and tractor owners have been particularly hit hard. Moreover, dealers in steel, cement, and bricks have reported significant business losses.
Historical Context
Sand mining was previously operational at several ghats including Vinhua, Sarja, and Dhamdhama. However, operations were suspended following government directives. In addition, the National Green Tribunal had imposed a ban from July 10 to October 15.
Administrative Response
SDO Sulochna Meena has assured positive action on the matter. Meanwhile, industry experts estimate that the prolonged suspension has caused losses worth several crores to the local economy.
On the other hand, environmental activists have emphasized the need for sustainable mining practices. “We need to balance development needs with environmental protection,” an expert commented.
